Combining over 30 years of experience in cultural, institutional, residential and sustainable design, Boxer Architects was formed in 2017 out of a shared ideology about the architectural process. Relying less on digital techniques and celebrating hand drawing and model building as investigative tools to design and realize meaningful human space. The pen or the knife, more primarily linked between hand, heart and mind, communicates ideas with more spontaneity and warmth than a computer alone.

Our studio is the polar opposite of the sterile, neutral white cube. In the tradition of an atelier, we practice with our own integrated model shop and next to an allied fabricator, providing the space and capacity to explore and refine modern details 1 : 1 with unparalleled immediacy. Firmly believing our role as architects does not end with a printed plan, we engage and collaborate with our building partners and craftspeople, forging long-lasting and mutually respectful relationships. We learn from each other, resolving the surprises and opportunities unique to each site, ensuring the spirit of the project is nurtured forward as a community.

Responding to the needs of our clients, our process seeks to understand the intricacies of programme and desire to design spaces that transcend function and  move into the realm of delight. Functional and technical challenges are resolved through exhaustive research and iteration, while harmonious proportion, appropriate scale, and sensitive materiality are revealed intuitively. Out of seemingly infinite variation, a natural outcome arises. What we create are sensory experiences, welcoming environments, and a feeling of "home" notions of comfort equally applicable to a cherished family house or an area shared with strangers for three hours. Together we create spaces realized and built by hand, expressing the dialogue between client, site, architect, and builder.
